Situated in the former grounds of RAF St Mawgan and occupying a Hardened Aircraft Shelter (HAS), the centre opened to the public in September 2016. During their first year of operation over 15,000 visitors – both locals and holiday makers – have been to see the collection of cold war military jets, a VC-10 air to air refuelling aircraft – and other exhibits.
As well as being a visitor attraction CAHC have hosted school day trips, Bloodhound Rocket Model Car making, birthday parties – and more.
Operated mainly by a very dedicated and knowledgeable team of volunteers – many former RAF and RN – visitors get the chance to actually sit inside the aircraft cockpits, and learn from the experienced team of visitor guides. The visitor experience appeals to all ages – from children, right through to veterans who remember and appreciate these amazing aircraft. During winter months the hangar transforms into a large restoration base. Current projects are a Sea Hawk (British single-seat jet fighter of the Fleet Air Arm), which will be ready for the summer – and the iconic Lightning (likely to be a two year project)
